Work Hard, Play Hard

There are so many plots and conspiracies to control the public it is amazing. Religion, government, rampant materialism, police etc. One seldom perceived agent of control is our so called "Puritan" work ethic. Here's a belief that if you work hard enough, long enough, you will feel better about yourself. This served a purpose in subsistence societies as non-contributing members could spell the downfall of the community's very existence. Here and now, we have a society that produces more than enough basic necessities for everyone yet our work ethic remains the same as in the fifteenth century.

We are trained to believe that you should devote 80% of your time to work or else you're a lazy slob. American society has been completely sold on the concept that if you don't work extremely hard you are unproductive and therefore worthless. This is a distinctly American concept as a recent study showed that 93% percent of Americans viewed themselves as hard working while only 31% did in Germany and 30% in Japan. Germans considered having a good time more important than work yet we Americans would never even dream of this! Now, tell me who stands to benefit most from this frame of mind? Those in power!

They hermetically seal office environments with climate controlled atmospheres and filter "white noise" through the speakers to discourage talking to your co-workers. A talking worker is an unproductive worker. Why do you think work environments are so bland? It's because they want no distractions, so you have to devote all your time to work as there is nothing else to do! We are mere slaves doing the master's work in dreadful conditions that are really no better than sweat shops, yet somehow they have made us feel that we have to do this in order to feel good about ourselves.

There is no better way to keep the masses in line than by making them believe they have to devote their life and energy to a job. Who can organize a rebellion when they're putting in 60 hours a week at McDonald's? Our values have been sold and maintained by a deceptive government and deceitful workplace. Our work environment has been completely sterilized to keep us from being "unproductive."

As if instilling a good "work ethic" is not enough, we now have a hyper evolved concept of leisure. As the office provides no stimulation, we have to look for it outside of work. Therefore we devote all our free time to rabidly pursuing sensory overloads to make up for the lack of it 8 hours everyday. We consume leisure activities as if they were our life's blood, never questioning why this is or if it's detrimental. Work, leisure, work, leisure. Who's got time to complain? I'm gonna go skydiving or better yet watch some people on TV doing it! Our values now emphasize work hard, play hard with no time devoted to why the fuck we have to do either.

The big boys in control must be drooling over the way things have turned out. Here they have a population of 280 million people that have completely bought into their concept that if you're not working, you're a piece of shit. It is especially bad for males, as you are not a "man" if you're not working. This has been medically proven as unemployed males experience higher rates of impotence, inferiority and depression.

Then we've been sold on the concept that we need to completely obliterate the mind numbing boredom of work by overloading our senses with shit like extreme sports and the happy, visually stimulating world of television. There's no time to think about why things are so fucked up when you're about to go bungee jumping or Seinfeld's coming on.

We have been totally and completely conditioned to buy into their concepts of "work" and "play." If you really want to fuck the system, use your time after work to organize working class resistance groups instead of watching Baywatch. Write a zine and motivate your fellow citizens into action through your fiery oratory and blinding truth. There are a million ways to effect change but none of them will be done at work or at play. If you choose to continue to adhere to the values of those in power then don't complain about your shitty ass life. Ignorance is their bliss.
