The Choice Is Yours

The editor of Gracious Fanzine asked to see a "strong argument" for Pro Choice, and whether this is one or not is for you to decide, but one thing is certain: there is nothing worse than having no choice at all. And even though I think men should not be as heavily involved in a debate that is essentially a woman's personal choice, I will put in my two cents.

First, the key word is choice. The choice of whether a woman will get an abortion or not. This right to choice is fundamental to the supposed freedom our country is so proud of. If a woman does or does not have an abortion, at least it is her choice and not a government or theological mandated dictate. This seems like such a simple concept yet Pro-Lifers seem to think that by limiting it to no choice but their own, it is somehow the right thing to do in a "free country." Not to mention, this one choice becomes less and less appealing when it’s spewed non-stop from the mouths of militant, murderous suburban housewives, enslaved by their own demonic offspring that seem to have nothing better to do then project their own anger on their fellow citizens.

Second, is our notion of the quality of life. This basically comes down to your own belief of whether or not living life, no matter what the costs, is worth it. Some people refuse to be on life support while others embrace it. Some people commit suicide while others continue to lead a miserable life. In the case of abortion it also comes down to quality of life. Will the child lead a quality life if it's born? Will the child of a 13 year old lead a quality life, nurtured by its mature and responsible mother and father? Will the offspring of a rape or incest victim lead a quality life, proud of its heritage? Will an infant, born to unwilling parents, lead a quality life, when it's neglected and forgotten by resentful parents?

Pro-Lifers believe life should exist at all costs. It doesn't matter whether the child is born to a cracked-out prostitute or and AIDS infected drug addict, life is life and that's it. A saner, less black and white outlook, takes into consideration that the child, if born, will only be born into a miserable existence, not worth living. Where is the life in being born already addicted to drugs? Where is the life in being born, only to die a few years later from AIDS related complications? Where is the life in knowing your father is your uncle?

The Pro-Lifers only view life in their own terms. As most are well-off, white and christian, they see life as the suburb they grew up in and the Ivy League school they graduated from. They see life as the nice car and the subservient wife. To them life is good and why shouldn't it be, they have it all. They cannot comprehend that a life could be so miserable as to not even be worth living because they have been given everything since birth. They do not understand the misery these children will endure through their torturous, often short lives. Do we need to see any more examples of how a person, raised in an unloving family, will turn out? Still, the bible says its wrong and we must obey!

Personally, I think a lot of times that life isn't so special. We endure countless hardships and for what? For a heaven? We watch animals eat each other or kill insects without thought as if our lives are any more important or meaningful. We've tried to make our lives seem special or think what we are doing is important but in reality, it just doesn't matter. Our lives are just as insignificant as the bug you crushed on your windshield driving to the punk rock show. In my mind, by aborting a child doomed to misery, you are being kind and compassionate, which is really the only thing we can hope to achieve in our lives.
