Subversion #6
This was the final issue. I went big time and did a full size newsprint version just like the big boys but alas, pumping out essays and record reviews and trying to work a full time job was just too much to do by myself so I folded shortly thereafter. It was cool to have one real issue though! As you can see from the descriptions, a lot more personal stuff this time around.
Never Surrender
This was about a new law California passed at the time which was basically a way to rip off employees that regularly did overtime. This directly affected my income at the time so you can imagine I was pretty pissed!Black Holes In My Head
This was my theory, somewhat accepted now, that the big bang was in essence the last black hole swallowing the last bit of matter/other black holes from an old universe and then exploding out the other end to create a brand new universe. One Man & The Bottle
A treatise on why I continue to liberally consumer alcohol even though it’s brought me nothing but trouble and an increasingly worsening headache the next day. It’s sort of a justification piece and I got slammed a bit in the zine world for this but at least I admitted why I did it versus just saying "Let’s Party!"
What About The Economy?
This was my comeback to an article Wired Magazine had done called the "Long Boom". This was right before the economy blasted off with the dot com shit and everyone was saying we were in a "new economy" that would be a sustained boom for decades. Being in the trenches and not getting raises and seeing friends laid off gave me a bit of a different outlook so I wrote about it here. We all know who was right but it’s still fun to say I told you so! haha.Fry The Bastards
This essay was about the increasingly common practice of trying minors as adults. Rather than deal with systemic issues like poor education and income inequality that cause youth crime we were just locking them away at an earlier age, hoping that if we sent enough "bad" people to prison only good people would be left. Given California has the largest penal colony in the country; I guess not much has changed.
We're Only Going To Die Of Our Own Arrogance
This is about the time there was a fire in my thirty story high rise and even though there was visible smoke in the hallways, almost no one left the building, thinking instead it must have been another test.
Mr. Rogers Neighborhood
This is about when I first moved to San Francisco and the tough time I had breaking into the corporate world. Even with a college degree I was reduced to temp jobs like answering the phones or moving boxes for an office move. Not that those jobs were beneath me but it was a rude wake up call after all the "go to college and you’ll get a good job" everyone tells you about. I’m sure many of you had similar experiences to this. I just wish someone had warned me.
