Subversion #1

Here's the debut issue. I started working on this in 1995 but didn't manage to finish it until mid-96. Making a zine is a hassle!! I think I cranked out the biggest batch of essays for this one because I didn't have to review any zines or music so enjoy!

Decentralization Of The Government

Pretty obvious from the title but this is basically the notion that with the internet, (still kinda new at the time) and the ensuing ability for citizens to vote directly on issues, there was no need for the type of representative democracy that was invented in the days of horse buggys and oil lamps. Guess I never really thought at the time that the people that make the laws surely wouldn't put themselves out of business...

Unabomber
While I admired his goals I dissaproved of his methods. Basically a rant on not killing people even if they are killing the earth.

Politics As Usual
This is a rant against politicians using hot button issues like gay marriage to distract us from the real issues like poverty and education (and now ten years later, the Iraq war).

Would You?
At the time, majors were snapping up every punk band in sight: Green Day, Jawbreaker, Samiam, Offspring etc. and every punker was calling these bands sell outs. I merely posed the question that what would you do in their position? Not take the money so you could keep your street cred? I guess it's not as much of an issue these days...

The New Wave of Religious Fascism

Once again a pretty self explanatory title. This was when abortion clinic bombings were picking up and the Religious Right began taking over the Republican party. Just as valid today as not much has changed...

Freedom Men
Nice blast from the past. For those who don't remember, the Freedom Men were these guys in Montana that didn't want to to pay taxes anymore so they bought a bunch of guns and told the government to fuck off. They did want to still use the roads and everything else taxes pay for though so that was my big problem with them.

Retail Fraud
Seems trivial now but this was basically about shady stores trying to sell free samples. Not sure why I was so worked up about this...

Mailing Lists
A rant about companies selling your name and address to other companies so you receive an endless stream of junk mail. Once again, seeing as the post office gets paid to mail junk mail, I should have realized why it would never change.

Am I Still Punk?
The start of a bunch of anti-fashion punk rants. I always thought punk was in your heart and not your hairdo. Now I look like every other faceless cube dwelling corporate drone so the only place punk can be is on the inside!

Resource Management
This is about logging and fishing companies exploiting finite resources at an unsustainable pace. Obviously now these companies employ more sustainable management practices but this is still a big issue.

Power
Basically an anti-gun rant.

MTV Ruined The Pit
Around the time this was written there was a serious degradation in the quality and courtesnouss of moshers in general. While I had no idea how bad it would become, this was me lashing out for the glory days of when pitting was a fun and somewhat safe activity.

The Stock Market Of Misery
This is a rant against the stock market in general which highlights the fact that when unemployment is low, stocks go down (less available workers means higher labor costs which equals LESS profit) or when a company fires a bunch of people, its stock goes up. I know it's all just math and formulas but it sucks that people profit off others misforturnes.

Johnny Law
Anti-cop rant focused on the fact that people, manipulated by endless streams of fear induicng newscasts, will let their rights be compromised if they think it will help combat crime. Sort of what George Bush Jr. has done with the Freedom Act etc.
